Ponniyam Vayal in Thalassery, Kannur, is a site of historical and cultural significance, renowned for its association with the ancient martial art form, Kalaripayattu. TThe duel concluded with Othenan's victory using the controversial move Poozhikadakam, followed by his own demise at the hands of Mayankutty, a disciple of Gurukkal.
To honor this legacy, the Ankathattu (duel stage) was reconstructed, and the annual festival Ponnyathankam is held during the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March). This festival showcases Kalaripayattu performances and various folk arts, celebrating the region's rich heritage
