Historically, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, the lion-hearted king of the Kottayam dynasty, fought his first battle against the British here and took refuge among the Kurichyar tribal community in these forests. Steeped in legend, Puralimala is also linked to the Ramayana—said to be a part of the mythical Maruthwamala, which fell from Lord Hanuman’s hands on his journey to Lanka. The deity of Parassinikadavu Temple is also believed to have passed through Puralimala on its journey from Kunnathurpadi. Key attractions include the ancient Harischandra Fort, built by King Harischandra Perumal, and the Kalarikkal Kalari, one of Kerala’s oldest martial art training centers, associated with heroes like Thacholi Othenan and Pazhassi Raja. Surrounded by dense forests, Puralimala is ideal for trekking, mountain biking, off-road drives, and eco-tourism activities. The best time to visit is October to March.
